This picture book is by New Zealand author Megan Holden, so not to be confused with a US book with a very similar name.
Genial dragons are a popular motif in books for little ones and the cover picture will certainly appeal.
In this story, Sparky’s having trouble living up to his name – his flame has gone out, he’s lost his confidence. So he packs his bags (one must wonder, what would a dragon take?) and goes looking for something to reignite his flagging spirits. Several other creatures help him on his journey of self-discovery by contributing their learned wisdom.
Rhyming stories are popular with children, though they work better for readers when strict metre is used.
It's an attractive book to look at, neat and colourful with very appealing pictures throughout, on good quality paper.
The portrait format rather than the landscape design usually chosen for picture books, makes it harder for the reader. The binding is tight and the print unnecessarily small, particularly where it is superimposed on the artwork and in a smaller font size. So it’s not one for children to read for themselves, and could be difficult for a reader with aging eyes, at bedtime in lower light.
