So you want to be a nurse. Yes, yes, yes. Nurses are born not made and the author knew that was she wanted in life so that is what she did. Her career lasted 46 years. With her stories of that time, readers are entertained and informed with highlights and some low lights over the years.
We start off with the stringent training in an English hospital and all nurses will identify with early days of hard work, long hours, night duties and the study that was necessary to reach the goal of S.R.N.
We are given glimpses of further training into district nursing and midwifery, then with romance and marriage.
She and her family had time on the island of Sark and later on in New Zealand, mainly as a district nurse, and she shares her stories of birth, life and death. These stories made the book so readable it was hard to put down. There were times when humour shone through but there was also the drama and the pathos that comes with working in areas where back-up is not available. This is where the experience of district nursing is so valuable.
With a medical background myself, in and about the same era, I found myself reminiscing over many of her experiences that many nurses identify with. It is with this in mind I feel the book will appeal to younger nurses as they continue their work in the nursing world.
I loved this book. It is beautifully written with nice short chapters. It flows through the years, although I felt at times a few clues about when would have been helpful.
The author has written other books. Some are of her nursing journey, some fiction. They are worth looking out for.
Happy Reading.
