Reading record #3

3/1/2014

Comments

The final total for 2013 – 93.

What were they?  Biographies & autobiographies, literary novels, collections of short stories, collections of essays/articles/columns, travel, a selection of fantasy & otherworld, even a couple of vampire books! They were new and old, including the latest Man Booker winner and rereads of several classics.

What were they not? Romance, erotica, porn, horror, violent thrillers.

This year, there’s a larger proportion of light novels, which likely goes some way to explaining why the total is much higher than other years. There’s also a greater emphasis on humour, another factor, as this kept enticing me back. An injury that stopped me being so physically active for a time no doubt contributed too.

For many years while I was an academic I read a lot of non-fiction – some years almost exclusively. Since then I have delighted in being able to read lighter novels for relaxation and enjoyment. This year I also resolved to avoid violence as much as possible - see topic "I've taken a stand", further down.
Though some of the novels read are set in times of war, the best consider the lives of the people affected by it rather than those involved in the fighting.

I’ve discovered women writers who are really funny, and looked for more of their books – consequently women authors account for 60% of my list.

I’ve reviewed about a third of those I've read. Why not all? Allowing an average of 30 minutes to review and post each, to do the lot would take a week’s work time, so I've been selective.

What will 2014 bring? I hope to be rewarded by finding many gems.

Today I started the list by adding book one for this year.
