Your opinion, please

After the inspiration, the planning and plotting, the months or years of writing, rewriting, polishing, repolishing, repolishing the repolished, you’d think an author could say “finished”.
But no. Then comes all the other things that go into final production of a book – engaging an editor, proof-reader, designer, before printing and/or digital publication.
Selecting a new cover design is always a difficult part of the process, so for my forthcoming book I thought I’d get wider expert opinion – from you, the all-important readers.
The designer and I have reduced dozens of possibilities down to two. Which do you prefer? Please vote via the buttons, or leave a comment.
       Thank you.

There's more drama in the second cover, Bronwyn, even though the first looks cleaner. Definitely the second, for me! When is it out?

Thanks, Tony.
It will be out in a few weeks - when all those fiddly but necessary production things are attended to.
Cheers.

The first cover could be a scene in the Orkneys. The second is definitely not Orkney. The paua/fish/hook is a dead giveaway . . .

Second one definitely says New Zealand to me.

I like the cleaness of the first option but it seems No I is in the minority

Not at all. Lots of responses are coming in, from this page, Facebook, and private emails. The 2 options are running neck and neck at the moment. I'll see what the figures are in a few more days. Thanks for voting.

The typeface on the first cover doesn't look quite right, as the S in THESE looks too small, compared to the E. The word HERE looks too big as a whole word.

I like the second cover best. It somehow seems more alive and inviting especially when you see the fishes head - at least I think that's what it depicts at the top of the paua fish-hook.

Hi, I cannot vote for either and I’ll tell you why. Being designer I may be over critical, but layout, font choice and size are extremely important to engaging a reader on first look. I don’t like the font and it’s too big. The word “Islands” is more important than “These and “Here”. I don’t like the fish at all, it’s size, color or the placement under the words. It has no impact other than distracting. I do like the book cover photo. It gives a sense of desolation and mystery in an unknown place. You need to change font and integrate the font, its size, color and layout into your photo cover to create a sense of mystery and curiosity.
